Air week!!

So we started a new week long holiday programme today. What was meant to be a small group to begin with mushroomed up to 17 children which was wonderful! We were joined by a number of children who came on our programmes during the Easter School break. Samson, Sebastian, Timo, Lloyd, Declan, Onyx, Fionn and Brandon. There are however a lot of new children too – Suumana, Cheren, Bibi, Luc, Irie, Luke, Taylor, Zoe and Ayana.

We started the day with games so everyone could relax a little and get to know each other. After that we began working on our first project of the week….making something that can fly. I had originally wanted the group to make birds which hang from the ceiling, with wings connected to a string that you can pull so they flap. Resisting a familiar impulse to make them all do what I had imagined…I decided to open the activity up to see what the children’s imaginations generated. I am so happy I did this! Their creative juices started flowing before I even finished the demonstration session.

By the end of the day, there were a wide range of bees (all sizes and shapes), an alien, a computer creature, a huge butterfly and a bird. Check out our facebook group to see pictures from the session today. I would have never thought about making a bee to be honest, but the group loved it. Now we are thinking it may be fun to build some enormous flowers to go with bees!  Guess we will just have to wait and see what the rest of the week brings…
